Getting started sharing your journal as a web page

Sharing your journal as a web page (or on Facebook) provides a fast and simple way to capture those fun family moments and share them with friends and relatives at the same time. You choose the web address. You control which journal entries to share, who gets the link to the shared journal, and whether you want to hide information such as the names of your children. Sharing quick stories is sure to put a smile on everyone's face and, because it's so easy to do, it will put a smile on your face too. It takes just a minute to set up using the following steps:

1. From your Cozi Family Journal, click the Share our journal menu.

2. Select Share as a web page.

3. On the Start page,

  • Enter a name for your journal under Give your journal a name.
  • Enter a journal web address under Choose a location for your journal. You can select one of two available options:

a. If you would like an address that is easy to remember, select We want to choose an address that's easy to remember. Enter the address you would like in the field. If the address entered is not available, Cozi will suggest an alternative address for you. You can use the available address or enter another address.

b. If you would like Cozi to create an address for you that is basically impossible for someone to guess, select We want an address that's basically impossible to guess.

Note: if you are editing an address for your family journal that you have already shared, click Change. This will permanently change the location of your journal to a new jumble of letters and numbers. People will no longer be able to see your journal at the old location.

  • Decide whether to share the stories you have already written in your Cozi Family Journal under Share the stories you've already written?
  • Click Continue.

4. On the Protect Kids page,

  • Select the Yes, we want to hide key words in our journal check box if you decide to enter key words for people or places you have written about that you wish to remain anonymous. This step is optional.

1. Enter the key words you would like to hide in the entry field(s) in the left column. You can add any key words you like, such as the name of your child's school, teacher, and so on.

2. Enter the replacement value(s) you would like others to view on your shared journal in the right column.

Note: Cozi will suggest a key word for some of your household members by default if you select this option. If you do not wish to protect the suggested key word, click Delete next to the fields.

3. Click Delete if you wish to remove the key word from the list.

Note: Some common words are often used for names (such as Will, Mason, and Bill). Cozi will detect some of the most common words and display the warning "Common Word!" next to the row for the specific key word entered. In these cases, if the common word is not entered with a capital letter, your replacement word will not be displayed.

  • Click the See what our journal will look like button to continue.

5. On the Preview page,

  • Review how your family journal will look as a web page. If you decide to change an option or key word, you can go back to change your entries by clicking the buttons at the top of the screen.
  • Click Yes, share our journal! when you are ready to share with friends and relatives.

If you do not want to share your journal, click Cancel. Your journal will not be shared.

6. On the Invite page,

  • In the From field, select the email address from which you want to send the journal invitation.
  • In the To field, enter the email addresses of friends and relatives with whom you want share your family journal.

Note: You can import email addresses from your favorite email program listed to the right of the To field.

  • Cozi provides a standard message and family signature to be included in your journal email invitation. You can edit this message—just select and delete the part of the message you don't want to include and type a new message that you would like your friends and family to see.
  • Click Send now to send the email invitation to friends and family. If you would like to skip this step, click Do this later.

7. On the Updates page,

You can inform friends and relatives of recent stories in your family journal in a variety of ways. After you have shared your journal, you may choose to send a monthly newsletter or post your journal entries on Facebook. Or, do all of the above—you decide.

  • Click Done to return to your journal.

2. Select Change general sharing settings.

3. Enter a new journal location under Choose a location for your journal.

4. Click Continue.

Protecting key words (such as kids' names)

Replacing key words in your journal content is optional. You are sharing this journal only with those friends and relatives you send an invitation to. They will have access to the location you specified for your shared journal. There are no guarantees that they will not forward this web address to others, as they may be excited about the news you are sharing and want to share it with their friends or other family members.

If you feel like you want to protect the names of your children or locations that your family visits often, you have the ability to do so using the key word protection feature on the Protect Kids page. See how to do this in Getting started sharing your journal through Cozi with friends and family.

Note: Key word protection is provided only when you share your family journal as a web page. Journal content will be displayed as entered in the Cozi Family Journal when share your journal on Facebook and when you send a journal entry by email.

The difference between Shared and Private

All journal stories marked Shared in your Cozi Family Journal will be shared. Any stories marked Private will be visible to members of your immediate household. You can decide whether to share the stories you have already written in your Cozi Family Journal:

1. In your Cozi Family Journal, click Edit.

2. Click the Shared or Private link next to the Date link to access the drop-down menu.

3. Select Shared or Private in the drop-down menu to change the setting.

4. Click Save.

What the shared journal looks like

Your shared journal will look similar to the way it does in your private family journal, with some improvements to the design:

  • Your family photo and journal name will be front and center. So will the journal entries and images you decide to share. We have designed this web page so your friends and relatives won't have any trouble enjoying what's new in your life.
  • Your journal entries will be organized by month. Friends and relatives can view your most recent entries, or they can view entries you have written by month and year.
  • Your friends and family will have the ability add "smiles" for individual journal entries.
  • Your friends and family will be able to start their own journal so you have a way to keep up with what's going on in their lives!
  • There will also be a few clearly marked advertisements from Cozi's partners. This allows you, your friends, and your family to enjoy this feature for free!
  • In future versions of the shared journal, your friends and family will have access to links to tips, articles, and offers from the Live Simply area of Cozi.com. They will also be able to add comments to each journal entry, along with other great features we are working on.

Remember, you can preview your Cozi Family Journal before you share it.
